As you prepare for your visit to Chapel Hill, please look at the schedule of demos and discussions below and be sure to bring with you any materials, information, files, etc, that might contribute to our discussions or that you would like to share with the group. Please bring your computer, too!

All of our sessions will have participants/audience with different areas of expertise: humanists, musicians, computer programmers, artists. We will want to vary the focus of our discussions to engage all areas of expertise, so we will all be learning about how others work and what their concerns are. I am really excited about this – I hope you are too.

Before you arrive: be sure to visit IDEA’s website and get a password so you can access the manuscripts interface.

Travel

General information

The weather in Chapel Hill/Durham is more or less like the weather of Bologna: cold in the winter, but only occasionally icy or snowy. Be sure to bring a warm coat, walking shoes, scarf, warm gloves, warm socks.

RDU is a small airport, located about 15 minutes from Anne’s house and about 25 minutes from Aloft hotel. I have made arrangements for people with cars (myself and several grad students) to drive you to and from the airport, the hotel, campus, Anne’s house.

Anne’s house is about a 30-minute drive to UNC campus, and the Aloft hotel is along the way. The Aloft hotel (www.aloftchapelhill.com) is a small, modernist, boutique hotel with an exercise room, small swimming pool, and a fully-stocked bar. There is a breakfast station in the lobby, but no restaurant. There are restaurants and a Fresh Market grocery within 2-minutes walk.

Across the street from Aloft is a bus stop where any blue campus bus will take you up the hill to campus for free. Other buses will also take you up the hill, but they’re not free. If you wanted to walk to campus, it takes about 30 minutes on foot.

Anne’s house is located along the American Tobacco Trail, a paved trail through the woods, along the tracks where trains used to carry tobacco from North Carolina farms to the drying houses in Durham. If you like to take nature walks in the early morning or late afternoon, be sure to bring appropriate footwear and clothing.
